Psalm 119:4 | “You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.”

The verb the psalmist uses, “commanded,” underscores the authority of God’s word. His precepts are not optional. They come from the sovereign Lord who has the right to direct the lives of his people. The word “precepts” refers to God’s detailed instructions, the specific charges he gives for how we are to live before him. Our enemy, Satan, continually seeks to undermine God’s authority. He tempts us to treat God’s commands as suggestions rather than binding truth. The question he posed in the garden, “Did God really say?” still echoes in subtle forms today. Whenever we begin to weigh whether obedience is necessary, we are entertaining that same ancient lie. Spurgeon writes, “God’s precepts require careful obedience: there is no keeping them by accident. Some give to God a careless service, a sort of hit or miss obedience, but the Lord has not commanded such service, nor will he accept it. His law demands the love of all our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and a careless religion has none of these. We are also called to zealous obedience.” God’s commands are not gentle suggestions for improvement. He speaks with authority, and he speaks for our good. We do not approach his precepts casually or pick and choose among them. We pursue obedience carefully and earnestly, seeking to honor him in every detail of life.
