Psalm 119:101 | “I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word.”
Having seen that God’s word has made him wiser than his enemies, more discerning than his teachers, and more insightful than the aged, the psalmist responds with settled resolve. He deliberately restrains his feet from every evil way so that he might keep God’s word. Scripture has transformed his judgment and trained his desires. It has taught him to fear the Lord and to hate what God hates, giving him discernment not only to recognize sin, but to turn from it. The psalmist does not obey to earn God’s favor, but because he treasures God’s word. Obedience is not legalism. It is the visible fruit of a heart submitted to truth. Even in suffering, he enjoys fellowship with God because he walks in the light rather than in rebellion. Sin may appear attractive, but it never keeps its promises. Willful disobedience robs us of peace and slowly dulls the conscience. When sin is repeated and left unrepented, we begin to minimize what God has clearly spoken and ask, “What’s the big deal?” The psalmist chooses the opposite path. He does not negotiate with sin. Are there paths we continue to walk that God’s word has already named as evil? Are there sins we excuse rather than restrain? When his word exposes our blind spots, may we respond with conviction like the psalmist. Those who love God’s word prove it by where they refuse to walk.
