Psalm 119:111 | “Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.”

The psalmist declares that the testimonies of the Lord are his heritage forever. The Hebrew word translated “heritage” is nachal, a term that can refer to an inheritance or a rightful possession. Throughout the Old Testament, the land God assigned to Israel as their allotted portion is described as their heritage. Here, however, his portion is not a parcel of land or material prosperity, but the testimonies of the Lord themselves. His true wealth is found in the word of God and in the life of holiness it produces. This inheritance is eternal, secure, and far more dependable than anything this world can offer. Earthly inheritances fade and fail, but God’s covenant promises never disappoint. Spurgeon wisely observes, “Sometimes, like Israel at the first coming into Canaan, we have to take our heritage by hard fighting, and, if so, it is worthy of all our labour and suffering; but always it has to be taken by a decided choice of the heart and grip of the will. What God gives we must take.” God's promises are received by faith and held fast in hope. The psalmist does not grit his teeth in reluctant submission. He rejoices. Obedience to the word of God is never mere duty or drudgery. It is a delight!
