Psalm 119:144 | “Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.”

God is righteous, and his testimonies perfectly reflect his righteous character. Even in the midst of trouble and anguish, the psalmist does not question the goodness of God or the reliability of his word. He does not put God on trial. Instead, he submits himself to God and humbly asks for understanding. Affliction has not made him cynical or suspicious of God’s ways. Rather than demanding answers, he asks for insight. He wants to understand how to live rightly before God. What does God desire of him at this moment? How should he respond faithfully? The psalmist knows that life is found not in escape from suffering, but in rightly grasping and obeying the word of the righteous God. Spurgeon observes, “This is a prayer which he is constantly praying, that God would give him understanding. Here he evidently considers that such a gift is essential to his living. To live without understanding is not to live the life of a man, but to be dead while we live. Only as we know and apprehend the things of God can we be said to enter into life.” Are you truly alive, or only existing? True life flows from understanding God’s righteous word and ordering one’s life according to it.
