Psalm 119:155 | “Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes.”

The psalmist speaks with settled confidence. God will deliver him from the wicked because the wicked are not only his enemies, but God’s enemies. Their problem is deeper than disobedience. They do not seek the Lord’s statutes at all. There is no pursuit, no interest, no desire to know what God has revealed. They live in settled indifference toward his word. Matthew Henry observes, “How can those expect to seek God’s favour with success, when they are in adversity, who never sought his statutes when they were in prosperity? But eternal salvation is certainly far from them.” Those who reject God’s word place themselves far from his saving help. To reject his statutes is to reject him, and those who persist in that rejection will find themselves rejected in return. The psalmist draws comfort from this truth. His security does not rest in circumstances or in personal strength, but in his relationship with the Lord. He seeks God’s word. He loves it. He clings to it. And because the Lord saves those who fear him and walk according to his word, the psalmist knows that he is secure in the Lord, no matter how threatening the wicked may appear.
