Psalm 119:27 | “Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.”

The psalmist longs not only to know God’s word but to truly understand it. He prays, “Make me understand.” It has been said that only the One who created our minds can open them to grasp his truth. With deeper understanding comes deeper devotion. The psalmist does not ask to unravel hidden mysteries or master lofty doctrines, but to understand the ordinary commands that direct faithful living. Matthew Henry notes, “When he knew God had heard his declaration of his ways he did not say, ‘Now, Lord, tell me my lot, and let me know what the event will be;’ but, ‘Now, Lord, tell me my duty; let me know what thou wouldst have me to do as the case stands.’” As you read Scripture, slow down enough to ask, What does this require of me today? Consider what you are struggling with and measure your questions by what the word of God reveals. Then look for the clear path of obedience and take it. It is in walking the everyday paths of obedience that we grow in wisdom and find endless reasons to worship.
