Psalm 119:35 | “Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.”

The psalmist longs to walk in the way of righteousness because it brings him joy, yet he knows he cannot do so apart from God’s help. Spurgeon explains, “Thou hast made me to love the way, now make me to move in it.” Even when we know what God requires and see the beauty of his narrow path, we must depend on him for the strength and ability to follow it. As Christopher Ash writes, “Psalm 119:35 adds the nuance that obedience for this servant—and supremely for Jesus—is a delight. I ask not simply that I might obey but that God will incline my heart so that I desire to obey, as Jesus did on earth.” May we daily ask the Lord not only to show us the right path but to continue guiding our every step until our thoughts and actions are characterized by steadfast obedience. For God’s people, the path of obedience is not a burden to bear but a joy to pursue.
