Psalm 119:82 | “My eyes long for your promise; I ask, ‘When will you comfort me.’”
The psalmist moves from a weary soul to weary eyes. “My eyes fail” captures the picture. He has looked for God’s help so long that his eyes feel worn out. He waits and watches for the fulfillment of God’s promises, but nothing seems to change. He feels spent. Are you feeling worn out today? Maybe you have prayed for months or years and still see no sign of relief. The psalmist understands that kind of fatigue. He looks only to the Lord for salvation, so he brings his honest questions to God. “When will you comfort me.” He knows that while the wicked continue to press him, he will not experience the fullness of God’s comfort. When God ends the persecution and sets his servant free, then he will be comforted at last. The psalmist’s questions are not signs of unbelief but marks of a heart that keeps looking to God when everything feels heavy. When you are exhausted, keep your eyes on the Lord and his promise. He will not fail you.
