Psalm 119:93 | “I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life.”

When the psalmist promises he will never forget God’s precepts, he is not vowing to keep a few verses in his mind. He means he will never stop studying the word, never stop practicing it, never stop submitting himself to it. He will obey even when obedience costs. Matthew Henry captures this resolve with clarity. “The best evidence of our love to the word of God is never to forget it. We must resolve that we will never at any time cast off our religion, and never upon any occasion lay aside our religion, but that we will be constant to it and persevere in it.” True love for Scripture shows itself in unshakable perseverance. The one who has found life in the word will not abandon it for anything. He knows what God’s word has done for him. It has given him life. It revived him when he was dead in despair. It strengthened him when he had nothing left. It lifted him when no one else could. Spurgeon reflects on this miracle, “How blessed a thing it is to have the precepts written on the heart with the golden pen of experience, and graven on the memory with the divine stylus of grace.” May we echo the psalmist’s commitment. Let us never forget God’s precepts. Through them God has brought us life, and by them he continues to sustain us.
