Psalm 119:99 | “I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.”

The psalmist declares that he has not only more wisdom than his enemies, but more understanding than all his teachers. The Hebrew word translated “understanding,” sekel, speaks of insight or true comprehension. He is not boasting. He is bearing witness to where genuine understanding is found. Real insight does not come merely from education or experience, but from reading, meditating on, and obeying the law of the Lord. Since Scripture is God’s very mind on paper, no teacher can surpass the wisdom and insight of our Creator. No matter how brilliant or insightful a human instructor may be, every created mind falls short when compared to the wisdom of the Lord. Spurgeon rightly observed, “There is more wisdom in the testimonies of the Lord than in all the teachings of men if they were all gathered into one vast library. The one book outweighs all the rest.” Yet this understanding is not gained through knowledge alone. It grows through obedience. It is not enough to know what God says. By faith, we must do what he says. We deny ourselves, lean not on our own understanding, and gladly defer to his instruction for life. Though obedience may feel costly in the moment, we will never regret choosing God’s way over our own.
