Psalm 119:1 | “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.”
Psalm 119 opens with the aleph stanza, showing us where true happiness is found. Like Psalm 1, it teaches that lasting joy is rooted in love for and obedience to God’s word. The term “law,” or torah, refers to God’s instruction, his gracious direction in the lives of his people. The blessed are those whose way is blameless. This does not describe sinless perfection, but the life of one who has been forgiven by grace and is learning to walk in sincere obedience. Their “way” is the pattern of daily conduct shaped by God’s instruction. Charles Spurgeon wrote in The Treasury of David, “A blessing belongs to those who hear and read and understand the word of the Lord; yet it is a far greater blessing to be actually obedient to it, and to carry out in our walk and conversation what we learn in our searching of the Scriptures.” Joy is not found in ideal circumstances but in walking closely with God and trusting his truth. As you begin this journey through Psalm 119, remember this: blessing flows not only from obedience but from delight. We are not called to mere outward conformity to the law of the Lord. By his grace, we learn to love it. True joy takes root where the heart delights in God’s word.
