Psalm 119:2 | “Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart.”

The blessed are those who keep God’s “testimonies,” translated from the Hebrew word edot, which refers to his covenantal witness to his will. They live in faithful obedience to what he has revealed. They carefully guard his word and conform their lives to it. To keep is more than to hear. It is to treasure, protect, and practice his word. At the same time, those who are blessed seek the Lord with their whole heart. Their obedience is not mechanical. It flows from sincere devotion. John Calvin writes, “If God be the sole judge and disposer of our life, the truth must occupy the principal place in our heart, because it is not sufficient to have our hands and feet only enlisted in his service.” God desires more than outward conformity. He calls for undivided allegiance. The psalmist describes those who “keep” and “seek” as living in a steady pattern of pursuit rather than in occasional bursts of enthusiasm. Is your obedience partial or wholehearted? Do you consult God’s word only when convenient, or do you arrange every one of your days according to it? The truly blessed life is not found in divided loyalties but in a heart fully turned toward the Lord.
