Psalm 119:13 | “With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.”

The psalmist does not keep God’s word to himself. What he has treasured in his heart now comes forth from his lips. He declares God’s rules openly. The Hebrew word translated “declare” is saphar. It means to count or number something carefully, to recount events, or to tell something publicly. The psalmist speaks of God’s word deliberately, as one who has considered it and values it. As commentator Michael Wilcock writes, “What God says to him, he will say to others.” God’s word is not meant to remain hidden in the heart alone. Truth received becomes truth proclaimed. When God’s word fills our hearts, it will eventually be found in our speech. We speak about what we love and treasure. May the Lord help us speak Scripture naturally in our homes, wisely in our friendships, and courageously in our witness. When his word fills the heart, it will not remain silent.
