Psalm 119:15 | “I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.”
The psalmist makes a deliberate commitment not only to read God’s word, but to meditate on it. Biblical meditation is active and attentive. It is the careful turning of revealed truth over in the mind so that, by the work of the Holy Spirit, it shapes the heart. To “fix” his eyes on God’s ways speaks of focus and resolve. He intentionally directs his attention toward what God has revealed rather than toward passing distractions. Spurgeon writes, “He who has an inward delight in anything will not long withdraw his mind from it. As the miser often returns to look upon his treasure, so does the devout believer by frequent meditation turn over the priceless wealth which he has discovered in the book of the Lord. To some men meditation is a task; to the man of cleansed way it is a joy.” Many Christians are quietly absorbed with the pressures and preoccupations of daily life, leaving little time for the study of Scripture. Even when the desire is present, distractions quickly intrude. Let us resist the constant pull of lesser things. As you fix your eyes on his ways, his truth will steady your thoughts and direct your steps.
