Psalm 119:129 | “Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them.”

We begin the pe stanza of the psalm with a declaration of awe. The psalmist confesses that the testimonies of the Lord are wonderful. The Hebrew word pele, translated as “wonderful,” speaks of something extraordinary, marvelous, even beyond human ability. God’s testimonies are not merely helpful or insightful. They are astonishing in origin and power. Spurgeon captures this well when he writes, “Wonderful in their nature, as being free from all error, and bearing within themselves overwhelming self evidence of their truth; wonderful in their effects as instructing, elevating, strengthening, and comforting the soul. Jesus the eternal Word is called Wonderful, and all the uttered words of God are wonderful in their degree. Those who know them best wonder at them most.” Because the testimonies of the Lord are wonderful, the psalmist responds with careful obedience. He treasures them. He knows their value and refuses to treat Scripture casually. A heart that truly sees the wonder of God’s word will always seek to hold it fast.
