Psalm 119:164 | “Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules.”

The psalmist expresses overflowing love for the Lord by praising him for his righteous rules. He does not simply submit to God’s commands; he celebrates them. The word translated “rules” refers to God’s just decisions, his perfectly right verdicts. The Hebrew literally reads, “seven in the day.” Seven carries the idea of fullness or completion, recalling the seven days of creation. From morning to evening, the psalmist’s heart returns again and again to gratitude for the wisdom and righteousness of God. Spurgeon asks with convicting clarity, “Do we praise God seven times a day? Do we praise him once in seven days?” When was the last time you praised God specifically for his righteous rules, not only for his gifts but also for his commands, not only for his comforts but also for his boundaries? Stop and do so now. Thank him that his judgments are right. Praise him that his word is trustworthy. Rejoice that his righteous decisions guide you in the path of life.
