Psalm 119:33 | “Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.”

Psalm 119:33 opens the he stanza with a prayer for divine instruction. The verb “teach” is the verbal form of torah, reminding us that God’s word is his gracious instruction and direction for life. The psalmist longs to understand how to live according to God’s statutes and knows that only the Lord himself can interpret and apply his word to the human heart. Having been taught by God, he promises to keep or treasure that word faithfully. Some translate the final phrase “I will keep it to the end” as “I will keep it as a reward,” showing that God’s word is both the path and the prize for those who hear and obey it. As Spurgeon beautifully writes, “Those who are taught of God never forget their lessons.” Ask God not only to inform your mind but to direct your steps. Pray for understanding that produces endurance. A life taught by God is a life that finishes well. Godly endurance is not fueled by willpower but by hearts continually instructed by his Spirit and his word.
