Psalm 119:42 | “Then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word.”
The psalmist looks forward to the day when God’s deliverance will silence those who mock his faith. Though he has endured ridicule in his trouble, he knows that when God fulfills his promise, the shame will be lifted and his enemies will be silenced. The fulfillment of God’s word will prove that his trust was not misplaced. Matthew Henry observes, “When God saves those out of their troubles who trusted in him he effectually silences those who would have shamed that counsel of the poor (Psalm 14:6), and their reproaches will be forever silenced when the salvation of the saints is completed; then it will appear, beyond dispute, that it was not in vain to trust in God.” When our faith rests in the Lord and his word, every taunt will one day be silenced by the triumph of his truth. You may not have a clever reply when your faith is questioned or mocked. You may even walk away feeling small. But your defense is not your wit. Stay rooted in the word. Refuse to adjust your convictions to escape embarrassment. Trust God now. Let him vindicate later.
