Psalm 119:43 | “And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules.”
The psalmist pleads that God would never let him lose the boldness to speak truth. The Hebrew translated as “word of truth” is emet, a term that signifies what is firm, reliable, and trustworthy. God’s word is not shifting opinion but settled reality. It is faithful because it reflects his own faithful character. He does not ask only to possess the truth in his heart, but that it would not be taken from his mouth. He longs for the continued privilege of speaking it, praising it, and bearing witness to it. Matthew Henry writes, “We have need to pray to God that we may never be afraid or ashamed to own his truths and ways, nor deny him before men.” The reason for his plea is clear: “for my hope is in your rules.” His expectation is fixed on God’s righteous judgments. When our confidence is anchored in the truth of God’s word and not in ourselves, we will not be easily silenced. As long as we have breath, may we keep speaking his word with clarity and courage.
