Psalm 119:45 | “And I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.”
The phrase “walk in a wide place” adds new depth to the familiar biblical call to “walk,” now conveying the idea of living without restraint or oppression. It describes a life of freedom, no longer confined by the power of sin or weighed down by guilt. The psalmist experiences the liberty that comes from following God’s ways. Calvin observes, “If any man yield implicit obedience to God, he will receive this as his reward, that he shall walk with a calm and composed mind; and should he meet with difficulties, he will find the means of surmounting them.” The peace our souls long for is the fruit of seeking and applying God’s precepts. The psalmist’s longing for obedience grows as he experiences the true freedom it brings. Bondage lies in sin, not in submission to God’s precepts. If you feel trapped by anxiety, guilt, or restless striving, examine whether you have neglected the clear precepts of God. The wide place is not discovered by redefining truth but by walking in it.
