Psalm 119:54 | “Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning.”

The psalmist declares that God’s word fills his heart with joyful song. Whether he sings the Scripture itself or is moved by it to sing, the result is the same, for praise flows from a heart that loves God and his truth. As Spurgeon said, “The wicked shun the law, and the righteous sing of it.” He speaks of singing “in the house of my sojourning,” meaning wherever he finds himself along life’s journey. The word “sojourning” recalls his earlier confession that he is a stranger on the earth (Psalm 119:19). Though he lives as a temporary resident in a fallen world, his songs rise from an eternal hope. God’s word becomes his comfort and his confidence, giving him a melody that lifts him above sin, sorrow, and every passing trial. When you feel unsettled or even out of place in this world, let Scripture become the soundtrack of your heart. Fill your mind with God’s word until it overflows in sincere praise.
