Psalm 119:55 | “I remember your name in the night, O LORD, and keep your law.”
The psalmist recalls the name or the character of the Lord. In the night, when it is hardest to see clearly, he anchors his heart in what he knows to be true about God. Remembering the Lord’s name brings confidence for the future because it reminds him of God’s steadfast love and unchanging promises. Difficult as life may be, God’s word enables the suffering soul to sing even in the dark. Matthew Henry writes, “When others were sleeping David was remembering God’s name, and, by repeating that lesson, increasing his acquaintance with it; in the night of affliction this he called to mind.” Such meditation turns the psalmist’s thoughts toward obedience, because remembering who God is leads naturally to doing what God says. His example teaches all believers that the focus of their meditation should be on the Lord himself, trusting his word, resting in his care, and walking faithfully in his ways.
