Psalm 119:56 | “This blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept your precepts.”
The phrase “has fallen to me” (literally, “this was to me”) points to something granted or allotted by God. The word “this” could refer to several blessings mentioned earlier in the stanza: the comfort found in God’s promises, the remembrance of his name, or the strength to sing even in the night. Most likely, however, it refers to the privilege and ability to keep God’s precepts. Spurgeon wrote, “He had this comfort, this remembrance of God, this power to sing, this courage to face the enemy, this hope in the promise, because he had earnestly observed the commands of God, and striven to walk in them.” The psalmist recognizes that such obedience is not his own achievement but a gift from the Lord. The desire and strength to walk in God’s ways have been granted to him by grace. This verse reminds us that obedience itself is a blessing, given by God to those who love his word. May we stop and thank him for the grace that enables us not only to understand his commands, but to keep them too.
