Psalm 119:57 | “The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words.”

The psalmist begins the heth stanza with a declaration of devotion. The Hebrew word translated as “portion” is cheleq, referring to an allotted share or inheritance. To say, “The LORD is my portion,” is to declare that God himself is his chosen inheritance and greatest possession (see Psalm 73:26). His treasure is not in earthly gain but in his relationship with the Lord. Spurgeon observes, “Like the Levites, he took God to be his portion, and left other matters to those who coveted them. This is a large and lasting heritage, for it includes all, and more than all; and it outlasts all; and yet no man chooses it for himself until God has chosen and renewed him.” Every true believer can echo these words. God has chosen us, and by his empowering grace we choose him in return. Because God himself is our inheritance, we gladly promise, as the psalmist does, to keep his word. If the Lord is truly your portion, then nothing eternal can ever be lost. Keeping his word is not payment for his favor. It is the joyful response of someone who already possesses the world’s greatest treasure.
