Psalm 119:61 | “Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law.”
The psalmist faces a real crisis. The phrase “the cords of the wicked ensnare me” pictures a time of terror, showing the wicked as hunters who have trapped him with ropes. These are the arrogant scorners who rule with oppression. Yet even when his life is in danger, they cannot destroy his devotion to the Lord. His response is simple and steadfast: “I do not forget your law.” Matthew Henry writes, “No care nor grief should drive God’s word out of our minds, or hinder our comfortable relish of it and converse with it. Nor must we ever think the worse of the ways of God for any trouble we meet with in those ways, nor fear being losers by our religion at last, however we may be losers for it now.” The psalmist refuses to abandon the truth. He continues to act on the word and remains faithful to God’s law, trusting that obedience is never wasted, even in the face of affliction.
