Psalm 119:64 | “The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes.”

The psalmist sees that the whole earth is filled with God’s hesed, his loyal and steadfast love. All creation benefits from the Lord’s care, and he argues from the lesser to the greater: if the whole world experiences his goodness, how much more will God care for his covenant people? This realization stirs the psalmist to seek a deeper understanding of God’s word. His prayer, “Teach me,” is not merely a request for knowledge but a plea for the Spirit to impress truth upon his heart. Matthew Henry writes, “Thou feedest the young ravens that cry, with food proper for them; and wilt thou not feed me with spiritual food, the bread of life, which my soul needs and craves, and cannot subsist without?” God delights to teach those who long for his truth. When we see the earth filled with his hesed, our hearts are drawn to know our loving God more deeply and to walk in his perfect ways.
