Psalm 119:80 | “May my heart be blameless in your statutes, that I may not be put to shame.”

The psalmist prays for a heart that is blameless. He wants a heart ready and willing to do whatever God says and a life that reflects that inward devotion. He refuses to live as a hypocrite before God or man. He knows that shame comes when someone professes belief in God’s word yet refuses to live by it. Matthew Henry writes, “Shame is the portion of hypocrites, either here, if it be repented of, or hereafter, if it be not.” Spurgeon adds, “He who is right at heart has no reason for shame, and he never shall have any. Hypocrites ought to be ashamed now, and they shall one day be put to shame without end. Their hearts are rotten, and their names shall rot.” A divided heart leads to failure and regret, but a whole heart given to God stands firm. May we pray the words of the psalmist today. May God give us hearts that love his statutes, obey his word, and walk in a way that brings no shame, only joy in him.
