Psalm 119:97 | “Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.”

Psalm 119:97 opens the mem stanza with a joyful confession. The psalmist does not just respect God’s instruction. He loves it. That love is proven in practice. He reads God’s word, hides it in his heart through memorization, and orders his life by it. Scripture is not an occasional acquaintance but a constant companion. Calvin rightly observes, “If any person boasts that he loves the Divine Law, and yet neglects the study of it, and applies his mind to other things, he betrays the grossest hypocrisy; for the love of the law, and especially such an ardent love of it as the prophet here expresses, always produces continual meditation upon it.” Genuine love for Scripture inevitably leads to sustained meditation on it. Biblical wisdom does not belong to those who simply accumulate facts or master information in their head. It is given to those who humbly receive God’s word with love and submission. Scripture is not only to be learned but trusted and obeyed. God has graciously given us his law as a sufficient and trustworthy guide, directing our steps so we may walk wisely in every season of life.
