Psalm 119:96 | “I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your commandment is exceedingly broad.”
The psalmist looks honestly at life and concludes that every earthly thing, even at its best, has an end. The Hebrew word translated “limit” (qets) carries the idea of completeness or the full reach of something. All that belongs to this world, whether good or bad, eventually fades. Nothing here lasts. Spurgeon observed, “There is no perfection beneath the moon. Perfect men, in the absolute sense of the word, live only in a perfect world. Some men see no end to their own perfection, but this is because they are perfectly blind. The experienced believer has seen an end of all perfection in himself, in his brethren, in the best man’s best works.” In other words, the finest human efforts still fall short. Everything we trust in apart from God reaches its limit. But God’s word knows no such boundary. His commandments have no limit. They are perfect and holy, and they find their fullest expression in Jesus, the Word made flesh. May we never imagine that we can be saved or kept by anything other than the grace and mercy of our beloved Savior. Oh, how we need his divine perfection!
