Psalm 119:24 | “Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.”

The psalmist not only delights in God’s testimonies but depends on them as his counselors. God’s word speaks with wisdom and authority, directing him as trusted advisors would. His joy in Scripture is not sentimental but practical. He listens, submits, and orders his life according to what God has said. Calvin writes, “Guided by the word of God, and prudently yielding obedience to its dictates, there will then be no inlet to the deceits of our flesh, and to the delusions of the world, and we will stand invincible against all the assaults of temptation.” Scripture guards the heart by transforming the mind. Matthew Henry adds, “Those that would have God’s testimonies to be their delight must take them for their counsellors and be advised by them; and let those that take them for their counsellors in close walking take them for their delight in comfortable walking.” Delight grows where obedience is practiced. May we seek counsel from God’s word, allowing it to correct, guide, and steady us. And as we submit to its wisdom, we will find not only direction but deep and lasting joy.
